IPA: /ˌdaɪəˈkɪnɪsɪs/
KK: /daɪəˈkɪnɪsɪs/
The last phase of the first stage of cell division where chromosomes become shorter and thicker, and the cell prepares to divide.
During diakinesis, the chromosomes become more visible under a microscope as they condense.
Diakinesis is formed from "dia-" (meaning through or across) and "kinesis" (from Greek "kinesis", meaning movement). The term refers to the stage in meiosis where chromosomes move apart, hence the idea of movement through or across the cell.
Think of 'movement' ('kinesis') happening 'through' ('dia-') the cell during a specific stage of cell division.
